Using the Design Maturity Model to Analyze Products
So, something that I’ve been thinking about is how the different elements of the design maturity model (Style, Form+Function, Problem Solving, and Framing) can be used as filters to look at and understand a product.
I’ve broken down Pampers Kandoo Flushable Wipes to illustrate. Kandoo is P&G’s line of toilet training products for use by toddlers as they learn this important skill. As a parent going through this right now, the topic might be on my mind a little too much, but I think it’s a good example of how the elements of design maturity work together to define the entire product.
Style includes things like type, logo, color palette, that cute frog mascot, and even the Magic Melon scent.
Function+Form includes things like the toddler-friendly shape of the dispenser, the smaller-sized wipe to better fit toddler hands, and the instructions.
Problem Solving learning to use the toilet is difficult, and these products are trying to make that process work better for parents and children.
Framing but the key insight is that these are products for use by toddlers themselves, not parents, because toilet training is all about establishing independence, just like much of the rest of toddler-hood.
I’d be interested to see your take on the design maturity analysis for other products - if you take the time to look at other things, let me know in the comments!
