Are the Business Press Too Product-Centric?
If you’re following the business and design conversation, you’ve probably noticed Bruce Nussbaum blogging at NussbaumOnDesign. He’s a welcome voice with a tremendous reach. Still, reading Nussbaum or the other business press there’s a focus on product design that misses the mark for me. For example, in reference to implementing an innovation process, Nussbaum’s take is “Build it and new products will come.”
New products as the end goal of innovation shows a bias for design as problem solving, instead of problem framing. This product-centric refrain marks mainstream coverage of design, whether from Nussbaum or others. Are there other places where the framing aspect of design has really been embraced in the business press that I’ve missed somewhere?
