‘A Whole New Mind’ a Design Thinking Primer
Dan Pink’s A Whole New Mind has a lot in common with design thinking. I read it the week it came out, put it down, and haven’t thought a lot about it since…it’s in a preaching-to-the-converted conundrum, where the anecdotes were often familiar. While the title is A Whole New Mind, with a basic premise of balancing left-brained analysis with right-brained creativity, it’s the right brain that gets center stage. That means that the book isn’t so useful for people who are already exercising their right brained talents as designers, but may lack strength on the analytics side. I can understand the choice, given the assumed size of the left-brained business market, but I felt shortchanged and a little cerebrally lopsided afterwards. A nice confirmation of things I already do, but not a lot of substance beyond that for me.
At the same time, it’s a useful book to introduce design thinking to people who aren’t used to the idea of right brained usefulness. As a design thinking primer, A Whole New Mind is excellent.
